J-2-1

Sabina and Louise have been  the fastest students.They arrived at 9.00 saturday evening. of course, by plane it's easier. Hungarian joined Montloiser during the night, around 2 am. The slovenian traveled all the night and arrived in the morning. At 7.00, only 2 protugese and the Bordeaux students were still in the way. Fine weather, a bit cold (-5 ° C this morning, but it's usual in november).

More news tomorrow.

Landscape ambassador seminary : how does it run?

During a first experimentation maid in France in 2004, we noticed that the students have been very motivated because they had to work for locals that had an actual demand. Locals have been enthusiastic and very proud to be the subject of interest of foreign students and from a scientific point of view, the result opened new perspectives for better integrate the landscape wishes in a development project. That is why we want to put the students in an active mode by focusing the seminary on a concrete question asked by a local partnership. The students work must contribute to give the locals concrete answers by applying the theories toughed during the lectures and by using the methods they will elaborate during the seminary.

At the end, our aim is to produce a methodological method well adapted to the various situations met in Europe. On the other hand, we want that it could be easily toughed and transmitted to the stakeholders and advisers that will have to manage the landscape in the future.

Landscape Ambassador? What does that mean?

The E. U. has defined landscape protection as a priority in the Florence convention. This goal is a good illustration of the difficulty to go from a good idea toward good manners. In rural areas, the taking into account of landscape in a development project is difficult. On one hand, locals meet difficulties to express their wishes. On the other hand, landscape specialists and agronomists, land managers and environmentalists don’t think to explain to people how their opinion is argued. They often mix their own opinion with their scientific demonstration and hesitate to submit their point of view to a discussion.

That is why a new category of workers is needed : a "mediator" who has to help people to express their opinion and to prepare a debate by explaining the part of the symbolism and the materiality that drive the landscape preferences. However, to be efficient, this "landscape ambassador" must gather different qualities: 

  • theoretical knowledge
  • analysis methods coming from social and biophysical sciences
  • landscape consciousness
  • ability of earring people and working for the others

By this point of view, the landscape is not only an object of interest that need to be protected but a mediation tool that gather people around a common future.

Last meeting to prepare the arrival of the students. Stephanie and Catarina are discussing about the best way to discover the countryside.

 

A visit to the archives administration has permit us to collect a lot of old postcards and maps.

Professor Serge Briffaud is looking in his personal diary how to organise his stay in Auvergne.

 

The weather is fine at the regional park where you will stay but don’t forget to take warm clothes and sleeping bags, the weather forecast announces cold and rain in a close future.
