The Swedes started their travel very early in the morning (6.30 am) . Then all the others took the bus offered by Montemor municipality and at 10.15 am we wer all at lisbonn
airport. I t was difficult to leave us but as frenchies had a very short time to register we didn't had time to cry!
Nice flight, beautful view,

a little tired but it's the price to pay for these 2 intensive weeks.
We hope that all the others have well travelled. We expect that some will fill the blog to tell us their travel back!

After the last debreefing, all students had free time. Some went in the town, others rented horses to ride on the countryside. At the same time, the professors met to discuss about the future
landscape ambassador course that will be o

rganised by Roland in october in
Sweden.

During the evening, after the dinner, it was the last friendly discussions and the students
started a party that finished very early in the morning.
(I have many pictures to add but they will come tomorrow)

Morning started later and it was necessary after these intensives days of work. As an encouragement the the leasure, the weather was wonderful, hot and sunny and it's clear now that spring has
started. For all who come from mountaineous regions or from Scandinavia, it is a unique opportunity to catch a little part of this energy before coming back in the deep and dark winter. That is why
wo decided to do our evaluation of the seminar, outdoors, firstly by groups and after all togthere.
After the lunch, we wanted also to thank the Espaça de Tempo team for all their help, kindness and patience that have contributed to create these good feelings.
After, we delivered an official diploma of "landscape ambassador" capability. We decided to do it in the patio, a nice and quite place very well adapted to landscape reflexion.
You know what? I am very proud of the work done by everybody during this seminar and I wanted to thank my students for their involvement and motivation all along this time...
Now (3.00 pm) students have desappeared in the landscape. We will all meet togesther for a lst dinner this evening and after that will be the come back to our own little poor realities.

At 2.00 pm, the students who will have to present the work went down
and started a last repetition
The place was very nice, old building from the
XVII th century as you can see on the photo
As they had so many thngs to say, the students decided to put some extra documents on the walls.
MAny people went at the presentation and at 4.15 pm, the room was full.
For the presentation we used 2 beemers one with the english version, one with a portugese translation and it works very well
after the presentaton, very well appreciated by the locals and the official, a good discussion started
we had the chance to wecomme Mr Derevier, the represnetative of Frech ambassy who had contributed to finance the course and hse started with some questions related to orgnic farming and the
consequences of the new airport project and the TGV line.
The answers have been driven in Anglish, sometime in Portuguese. The opinion of the public was a good way to evaluate that the work was serious, professional but also very sensitive and human
related.
At the end, the strudents invited the persons that had welcome them during the seminar and ffered them a little present.
After 2 hours meeting, we passed to the second step, the Montemor buffet, that permit to continue the discussion in a more open way.
What happened after , it's another adventure t as wasn't present, I haven't anything to tell about.

After dinner, the frame of the presentation was well defined and everybody made his best for the construction of this collective work. Of course, it is difficult to cut in all the material that
has been produced during these intensive days but it is a necessity not to take more than 1 h for the final presentation because we want to let enough time for the discussion.
At 1.OO am, Jean François and Yves let the students alone but at 3.00 some were still working. Tomorrow morning,
Jean françois explaining how to better represent an idea with an image
the
Portuguese will finish the translation of the slides and everybody will move to the place at 2.OO pm for a last test.

Today started by a general meeting with all the students, in order to define which topics they had developed and what was their production. It
took more that one hour an half but it was a necessity. That permit everybody to be better involved in the process. After that meeting, the groups continue to work. At the end of the morning they
defined one representative who met with the professors to prepare the structure of the final presentation and the general organisation of the meeting.
Teresa remembered everybody the mains issues she was expected and the group decided this general structure:
- general presentation of the seminar by Teresa
- a brief exposure of the question
- a general methodology
- then the group 1 will present the synthesis of their landscape character approach
- then the groups 2 to 5 (farming activities, new residents, conflicts of use, nature conservation) will sum up briefly their investigations , focused on the main values,
constraints and trends form their point of view (each group will dispose at least to 10 mn for their purpose)
- one group will be created with one representative from each group to cross these different approaches to go deeper in the challenges for the future for the landscapes
of Montemor
After the dinner, a little meeting has been planned to define about what this last group will focus on.

Manuel Casa Branca is a teacher and journalist in Montemor who started an artist's education some years ago. Before he went to LIsbon, he had painted "science fiction", and when he got to the
city, he realized that he needed to deal with his native countryside, which was what he really understood. Since then he has painted cork oaks.
He approaches each tree as a personality and he sees the different trees as having relationships as if they were persons. There are trees with straight trunks that are proud and on their own,
and there are the trees that express a relationship with other trees, because their branches stretching out as if they were fingers on a hand. For him as a painter, the "spaces" created between the
branches are an important shape in each picture, just as important as the form of each branch.
Some of the views of the landscape of Montemor, Manuel compares with jazz. It is a landscape with varying dotted patterns, as if a rythmic complexity. He goes to the river sometimes because it
is cool, and he calls it the landscape of light and shade. He likes the blue of the sky reflected in the waer, but he finds this landscape difficult to paint. He finds the views of the castle seen
in between trees interesting, because, what is the point of interest in these views is the most distant and the least visible, especially if it is hazy like now.
Lately he has made a series of pictures that are more bstract that he calls "Re-montada", because they are a way of understanding this landscape in a more conceptualized way. There are women,
because he finds this landscape female: the portuguese religion emphasizes the female aspect of the spiritual in that very many of the churches are dedicated to "Nossa Segnora ....".The
different tree-shapes are used as symbols or "letters".
In one picture, Manuel has expressed his feelings about the increasing amount of fences. Movement in the landcape is forced to become more geometric, where it used to be a free flow.

As a habit now, the day started by Julia Carolino’s presentation about how to access local identity related to the perception of the landscape. This ethnological approach was a good frame to help
students t drive better their enquiries and interviews that they have planned to do today.
Then each group went on the field to meat people or to continue their investigations on the desk.
